Smart Bulbs vs Smart Switches
Use smart bulbs when: You want colour, per-bulb control, or rent and can’t rewire. Downside: if someone flips the wall switch off, the bulb goes offline.
Use smart switches when: You want to control existing fixtures, no new bulbs, and the switch always works. Downside: no colour; you’re replacing the switch.
Hybrid: Smart switch + dumb bulbs in hallways/utility; smart bulbs in living room/bedroom for colour and scenes.
Matter vs Zigbee vs Z-Wave vs Wi‑Fi
Wi‑Fi: No hub. Uses your router. Can congest the network with many devices.
Zigbee / Z-Wave: Need a hub (e.g. Philips Hue, SmartThings). More stable, mesh network. Lower power.
Matter: New standard. Works across brands. Needs Matter-compatible hub or device. Growing support.
Voice Control: Alexa, Google, Apple Home
Most smart bulbs and switches work with Alexa and Google. Apple HomeKit needs compatible devices or a bridge.
Set up in the brand’s app first, then add the skill or link the account in your voice assistant app.
Scenes & Routines
Movie night: Dim warm lights, turn off overhead.
Reading: Task light on, ambient dimmed.
Wake-up: Gradual brightening (if your system supports it) or scheduled on-time.
Create scenes in the bulb/switch app, then trigger via voice or automation.
Smart Lights Keep Disconnecting
Router: Too many devices? Consider a dedicated 2.4GHz network for smart home. Some devices don’t work on 5GHz.
Mesh: Ensure nodes are placed well. Smart devices prefer a strong, stable signal.
Power: Smart bulbs need constant power. If the switch is off, they can’t connect.
