Motion Sensor & Security Lights
Detection range: 6–12m is typical. For driveways, 12m+ helps. Adjust sensitivity to avoid false triggers from wind or small animals.
Lumens: 700–1,500 for entry; 2,000+ for large areas or floodlights.
Beam angle: 60° for focused spots; 90–120° for wider coverage.
Path & Pathway Lighting
Spacing: 2–3m apart along paths. Stagger slightly for a natural look. Closer (1.5m) for steps.
Solar vs wired: Solar is easier to install but less consistent in winter or shade. Wired gives steady brightness.
Bollards vs path lights: Bollards cast light down; path lights are lower. Both work—choose by style and trip hazard.
Deck & Patio Lighting
String lights: Weather-resistant (IP44+). Space bulbs 30–45cm. Drape with slight sag—too tight looks stiff.
Recessed deck lights: In step risers or deck surface. Low glare, good for safety.
Pergola: Pendants, strings, or recessed. Ensure fixtures are rated for damp/wet locations.
Wet vs Damp Ratings (IP & UL)
Damp: Covered areas (under eaves, pergolas). No direct rain.
Wet: Exposed to rain. IP44 minimum; IP65 for hosing or splash zones.
IP rating: First number = solids (6 = dust-tight); second = water (4 = splashes, 5 = jets).
